- Course objectives
- The series of lectures is an introduction to biology. The main goal of the course is to introduce students to the basics of biology, especially the basics of cell chemistry, molecular biology, cytology, virology, bacteriology, protozoology, histology of plant tissues and animal tissues, so that students can easily follow up on the study of biochemistry.
- Learning outcomes
- The student will get an overview of cell biology, processes in the cell, chemical composition of cell, cell division. He will also be able to describe plant tissues, animal tissues and their functions.
- Syllabus
- 1. Chemical composition of living systems Water, elements, inorganic substances, proteins, lipids, carbohydrates 2. Cell Cell theory, prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, plant and animal cells 3. Cell structures and their functions I Cell wall, cytoplasmic membrane, membrane transport. 4. Cell structures and their functions II Endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi complex, lysosomes, peroxisomes, vacuoles, mitochondria, chloroplasts, cytoskeleton, cell nucleus 5. DNA, cell cycle, mitosis and meiosis, replication, transcription, translation, signal transduction, regulation of expression. 6. Viruses - characteristics and structure. 7. Protozoa and fungi - characteristics and structure. 8. Bacteria - bacterial metabolism, characteristics and structure. 9. Plants - plant tissues, plant structure, plant organs, molecular systematics of plants. 10. Animal tissues - neural, muscular, epithelial and connective tissues.

- Assessment methods
- The exam from the subject Structure and function of the cell will take the form of a computer test in a computer room. The student will have a set of questions and answers, where he will click on the correct answers. There may be more than one correct answer to each question. To complete the course, it is necessary to have at least 50% of correctly answered questions. This form of examination is also used in state exams, and therefore this form of examination is used to prepare students for the state exam in biology. Only questions about the information that students will get during the lectures will appear in the test. All information about the exams is therefore in the presentations.
