Course objectives
The student will become familiar with the regional geology of the internal, central and external Western Carpathians.
Learning outcomes
After completition of this cours student will become familiar with terminology of regional geology in Western Carpathinas as well as with the structural contecp of these units.
Syllabus
  • 1. Basic geological division of the Western Carpathians, definition of individual units.
  • 2. Overview of geological mapping in the Western Carpathians.
  • 3. Geophysical data (Moho course, gravimetry, magnetometry, heat flux).
  • 4. Major fault zones, seismicity.
  • 5. Inner Western Carpathians - a meliata unit, a silca thrust
  • 6. Central Western Carpathians - tatricum, veporicum, gemericum
  • 7. Outter Western Carpathian - clippen belt, flysch zone, Carpathian foredeep, Vienna basin.
  • 8. Intramountine molasse basins.
  • 9. Neovolcanic rocks of the Western Carpathians.
  • 10. Pre-mesozoic Development of the Western Carpathians
  • 11. Development of Western Carpathians in Mesozoic
  • 12. Development of Western Carpathian in Tertiary
  • 13. Development of Western Carpathians in Quaternary
