Course objectives
The goal is to gain basic knowledge of biochemical processes in the human body necessary for the study of related specialized subjects. The subject extends and deepens the knowledge acquired during high school chemistry studies.
Learning outcomes
- At the end of this course the students should theoretically understand the basic knowledge about chemical principles of metabolism of saccharides and lipids, cellular bioenergetics, structure and function of proteins and enzyme catalysis.
Syllabus
  • 01. Introduction. Composition of living matter, hierarchy of structures. Amino acids, peptides, proteins: essential amino acids, isoelectric point, peptide bonding, peptides, structure and properties of proteins, simple proteins, complex proteins, scleroproteins, spheroproteins. Proteins of the immune system.
  • 02. Carbohydrates: monosaccharides, derivatives of monosaccharides, oxidation and reduction of carbohydrates, disaccharides, homopolysaccharides, heteropolysaccharides. Distribution, structure and function in organisms. Glycoproteins and proteoglycans. Practical aspects.
  • 03. Fatty acids, lipids, phospholipids, glycolipids, isoprenoids, steroids, lipoproteins. Structure and significance of biomembranes
  • 04. Nucleosides, nucleotides, nucleic acids and their functions, replication, DNA damage, transcription, translation. PCR.
  • 05. Enzymes, their structure and distribution. Mechanism of action, types of inhibition. Rate of enzyme reactions, activity, conditions. Vitamins. Transmission of nervous excitement, neurotransmitters.
  • 06. General features of the transformation of substances in living systems. Catabolism and anabolism, macroergic compounds. Carbohydrate metabolism, glycolysis, anaerobic and aerobic conditions, gluconeogenesis, Cori cycle.
  • 07. Krebs cycle, anaplerotic pathways. Protein and amino acid metabolism: transamination, deamination, decarboxylation. Urea cycle, ketone bodies.
  • 08. Lipid metabolism: lipases, β-oxidation of fatty acids, fatty acid biosynthesis, ketone body formation. Respiratory chain: localization, proton motive force, ATP formation (oxidative phosphorylation). Thermogenesis.
  • 09. Muscle biochemistry, muscle fiber, muscle protein, muscle contraction, muscle energy, smooth muscle, smooth muscle contraction, myorelaxants. Hemoglobin, hemoglobin breakdown. Bile dyes. Conversion and detoxification of foreign substances, oxidation and reduction reactions, conjugation reactions.
