Course objectives
Preparation of speeches, lectures, and other forms of presentations as a practice for conference presentations and thesis defence.
Learning outcomes
Enhancement of communication and presentation skills.
Recognition of elements and patterns in speech and nonverbal communication.
Development of ability to provide and accept constructive feedback and criticism.
Improvement and utilisation of improvisational skills for communication.
Syllabus
  • The course will take place in form of three intensive workshops. The first and the second will be focused on speech without visual aid, including verbal and nonverbal exercises, while the third one will be dedicated to presenting research in a "typical" way (with digital slides, e.g. powerpoint presentation). Each speech/presentation will be followed by peer feedback. In addition, we will play several short improvisational exercises, and discuss following topics:
    • time awareness while presenting
    • structure and format of a speech
    • voice intonation and stress
    • voice intensity and tempo
    • speech rhythm and pauses
    • posture and eye contact
    • facial expression and gesticulation
    • anxiety, stress, and embarrassment during public speeches
    • visual characteristics of a presentation
    • structure and content of a presentation
    • data visualisation
    • scientific poster and its presentation
    • asking questions and providing feedback

Assessment methods
No absences and active in-class participation.
Full completion of all assignments: 1 speech, 1 presentation, and 2 feedback speeches.

Teacher's information
Enrolling students must be willing to participate in all activities, which include open discussions, loud text reading, voice acting, and improvising in verbal and nonverbal forms. Such skills are however NOT required.
This course runs in three blocks (always Friday between 9:00 and 16:00). Following dates are temporary and may change:
