- Course objectives
- The course blocks will focus on the issues below and will be accompanied by practical examples. The course will end with a credit.
- bibliographic databases, scientometry and RIV - WoS, Scopus, Google Scholar, GeoRef, ScienceDirect, GeoscienceWorld and others; CrossLink, doi, open access - the future of publishing?, Scientometric principles, RIV and usable outputs; online collection of own citations - Researcher ID, Scopus ID, ORCID, ResearchGate, Academia.edu and more,
- Effective text writing in MS Word - tips and tricks,
- typographic basics - font sets, size, proportionality and font types, Czech encoding, special characters, hyphens and dashs, hyphenation, aesthetic and ergonomic text formatting,
- creation of scientific illustrations and tables - specifics and differences between raster and vector graphics, examples of basic types,
- philosophy and structure of scientific publication - why publish, specific article structure in physical geography, role of individual parts of manuscript, special article types,
- why, how and what to cite?, literature review, standard journal abbreviations, citations sorting rules, bibliographic databases - EndNote, Reference Manager, Mendeley and others; automatical creation of reference list in the required format,
- Publication Ethics, Intellectual Property and Plagiarism,
- English scientific style - main rules, tips and tricks, logical structure, argumentation, practical writing of physical-geographic text, most common mistakes and pitfalls in English,
- basic types of publishing process - editorial work, editor role, reviewer, review process, writing cover letter, the most common reasons for rejecting the article and what next?, preparing a revised manuscript, proofreading,
- Publication possibilities in physical geography in the Czechia and abroad. - Learning outcomes
- Student will be able to:
- prepare better scientific text, pictures and tables,
- orientate in physical geographical journals and their suitability for publication of selected topic,
