- Course objectives
- 1/ Introduction to descriptive mineralogy (crystallochemical classification of minerals, mineralogical nomenclature, mineral, variety, mineral assemblages and paragenesses) 2/ Processes of the origin of minerals: magmatic, pegmatitic, hydrothermal, metamorphic, metasomatic, hypergenic 3/ The native elements: Au, Ag, Cu, Pt, Fe, As, Sb, Bi, diamond, graphite, S, Se 4/ Sulfides: tetrahedral (sphalerite, wurtzite, chalcopyrite, bornite), octahedral (galena, pyrrhotite, niccolite, mixed tetrahedral and octahedral (pentlandite), with unusual coordination (molybdenite, millerite, cinnabar, covellite, chalcocite, argentite), complex sulphides (pyrite, marcasite, arsenopyrite, skutterudite, stibnite, boulangerite, tetraedrite, proustite, pyrargyrite, realgar, orpigment) 5/ The halide minerals: halite, sylvite, carnallite, fluorite, cryolite, atacamite 6/ Oxides and hydroxides: tetrahedral ( the SiO2 minerals, zincite, periclase), oktahedral (hematite, corundum, ilmenite, rutile, anatase, brookite, cassiterite, pyrolusite, columbite, mixed tetrahedral and octahedral (magnetite, spinel, chromite, franklinite, chrysoberyl), cubic (uraninite), with unusual coordination (cuprite). Gibbsite, brucite, manganite, goethite, lepidocrokite, diaspore, boehmite, limonite, bauxite. 7/ The sulfate minerals: anhydrous (anhydrite, baryte, celestite, anglesite), hydrous (gypsum, chalcanthite, melanterite, epsomite, alunite) 8/ Carbonates: calcite structure type (calcite, magnesite, siderite, rodochrosite, smithsonite), dolomite structure type (dolomite, ankerite), aragonite structure type (aragonite, witherite, strontianite, cerussite), other structures (malachite, azurite) 9/ Nitrates and borates: nitratite, niter, boracite, colemanite 10/ Chromates and molybdates: scheelite, wulfenite, crocoite, wolframite 11/ Phosphates, arsenates, vanadates: xenotime, monazite, triphylite, apatite, pyromorphite, vanadinite, erythrite, annabergite, vivianite, wavellite, autunite, torbernite 12/ The silicate minerals: a/ The network silicates: feldspars (orthoclase, microcline, sanidine, albite, anorthite, celsiane, hyalophane), feldspatoides (analcime, leucite, nepheline), polucite, beryl, cordierite, sekaninaite, zeolites b/ The layer silicates: apophyllite, talc, pyrophyllite, muscovite, paragonite, biotite, flogopite, lepidolite), chlorites, serpentine group, prehnite, kaolinite, glaukonite c/ The chain silicates: the pyroxenes (enstatite, hyperspene, diopside, hedenbergite, augite, jadeite, spodumene), the amphiboles (antophyllite, tremolite, actinolite, amphibole, glaucophane), the pyroxenoids (wollastonite, rodonite) d/ The ring silicates: turmalines, axinite, dioptase e/ The single tetrahedral structures: fenakite, willemite, olivine group, chondrodite, garnet group, the Al2SiO5 minerals, staurolite, chloritoide, titanite, topaz, zircon, dumortierite f/ The double tetrahedral structures: melilite group, zoisite and epidote group, vesuviane
