- Course objectives
- Petrology as a science discipline, position of petrology in natural sciences. The history of petrology in Bohemian countries and at world. Rocks and minerals, classification of rocks in the Earth,s crust, fundamental properties of rocks. Field, laboratory and experimental methods of rocks study. Rocks in the litosphere and space. Characteristics and classification of igneous rocks. Chemical composition of igneous rocks. Magma and igneous crystallization. Physical character of the magma and magma geochemistry. Experimentally investigated magmatic systems. Magmatic crystallization and differentiation. Crystallization diagrams. Nomenclature and classification of igneous rocks. Mineralogical composition of igneous rocks. Igneous fabrics. Descriptive petrology of essential types of igneous rocks. Sediments and their significance, general resources of the material, the occurrence of sedimentary rocks. The origin of sedimentary rocks, weathering processes, transportation and the environment (motion of the transportation environment, grain flows, transportation in the aqueous habitat, eolian processes, glacial and gravitational processes, sedimentation, environments of deposition. Main types of the sedimentation. Diagenesis in sediments. Composition and texture of sedimentary rocks. Classification and description of sedimentary rocks. Metamorphism and metamorphic rocks. Geological and petrological criteria for metamorphic processes. Physical and geochemical conditions of metamorphic processes. Conditions of metamorphism. Contact and regional metamorphism. Metamorphic facies. Characteristics of the mineralogical composition and fabric of the metamorphic rocks. Main products of the contact and regional metamorphism.
