Course objectives
Basic information on parasites of humans (protozoans, helmiths and arthropods) and on diseases transmitted by these parasites. The course is not elementary one and it is organized according to practical approaches, it means not according to parasite system. Big attention is devoted to autochtonic parasites, however tropical ones represent also very significant part of the course.
Syllabus
  • 1. How to work with parasitological journals and textbooks Parasitological laboratory, equipment, supplies, safety and quaility assurance 2. Macroscopic and microscopic examination of fecal specimens, human amoebae, Trichrom statining. Methods of cultication. 3. Giesma statining, Human flagellates, cultivation of Giardia. 4. Methylviolet staining. Intestinal protozoa, additional techniques for stool exanimation. Concentration and flotation techniques. 5. Concentration methods, eggs studies, staining of trematode adults. 6. Parasitology field work, collection aand examination of material. 7. Determination of parasitological materials. 8. Dissection of invertebrate intermediate hosts. Isolation of parasites larval stages. Determination of cercariae, vital staining. SEM exanimation. 9. Dissection of rodent host experimentally infected with Echinococcus multilocullaris. Parasite isolation. Serum investigation. 10. Dissection of rodent host experimentally infected with Trichinella spiralis. Parasite isolation, serum investigation. 11. Determination of trematoda: eggs and adults. 12. Malariological methods I: thick blood film, Giemsa staining. Microhematocrit centrifugation method. 13. Malariological methods II: Determination of parasite species.
