- Course objectives
- The course gives an actual general knowledge of complex Quaternary research. At the end of the course, students should be able to: Understand problems of climate development and climate changes manifestations at the Pliocene/Pleistocene boundary and throughout the Pleistocene and Holocene; be familiar with problematics of Pleistocene and Holocene stratigraphy and biostratigraphy; recognize the most common types of Quaternary deposits; understand the importance of fauna and flora research as important climatic indicators.
- Syllabus
- 1. Historical development of views on the climatic changes - general overview for mountain (Alps) glaciation and continental glaciation (N. and NW. Europe).
- 2. The oldest known cold oscilations - cause of the post-Cretaceous cooling, primary and secundary (supplementary) circumstances influencing climatic oscilations, evidences for the oldest known glaciation in southern (Antarctica) and northern hemisphere.
- 3. Natural environment during Quaternary - overview of cold (glacial) phases from the Pliocene termination till the end of the Pleistocene and their impact on the development of the river system in the areas of N. and NW. Europe, Quaternary climatic cycle, development of the vegetational cover thoughout the Pliocene-Holocene period.
- 4. Overview of genetic types of Quaternary deposits and their features I - glacigennic, glacifluvial and glacilacustrine deposits, glacial geomorphology and its characteristics.
- 5. Overview of genetic types of Quaternary deposits and their features II - eolic, colluvial, alluvial, limnic, swamp and peat deposits, cave deposits.
- 6. Periglacial processes and geomorphology - periglacial region, permafrost, cryogenous structures.
- 7. Pleistocene fauna of Europe - mammal evolution at the terminal Pliocene and at the beginning of the Pleistocene (Equus-Mammuthus and Wolf Events), Pleistocene evolution of mammals.
- 8. Selected methods of dating of Quaternary deposits - radiometric dating, dendrochronology, varve chronology, paleomagnetism, oxygen isotope stages (OIS).
- 9. Pleistocene biostratigraphy - basics of biostratigraphy, biostratigraphy in southwestern and eastern Europe.
- 10. Natural environment during the upper Pleistocene - eemian interglacial, its duration and vegetational characteristics; climatic characterization of the Visla glaciation period.
- 11. Quaternary deposits of the Moravian and Silesian regions - development of sedimentaion in glacial and extraglacial regions.
