Course objectives
Students should be able to understand and deeper analyze historical evolution of crucial physical theories, see programme.
Syllabus
  • The role of history of physics in teaching physics
  • Physical and astronomical knowledge in ancient Greece. Ptolemy's geocentric theory
  • Copernicus' heliocentric theory
  • Galileo's mechanics. Definition of the fundamental terms in the Newton mechanics
  • Stability of the solar system and the three body problem
  • The principles of the particle and wave theory of light.The field conceptions of Faraday and Maxwell
  • The special and the general theory of relativity. Origin, consequences and verification
  • Photoelectric and Compton effects. Black Body Radiation, the relations
  • Classical theories of atomic structure, interpretation of the spectrum
  • Formulations of the quantum theory
  • Artificial radioactivity, transmutations of elements
  • Discovery of galaxies. Hubble's law
