Course objectives
During lectures, students will learn about chemical structure of plant pigments and their functions in plants, about oxidative stress and basic antioxidants and antioxidative enzymes. Principles of main methods used in pigments and antioxidants determination in plants (spectroscopy and chromatography) will be explained.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction. Pigments in plants.
  • 2. Chlorophylls. Their chemical structure and functions.
  • 3. Antioxidative role of pigments. Carotenoids.
  • 4. Xanthophylls. Role of xanthophylls at the plants defense against stresses.
  • 5. UV photoprotection. Anthocyans. Secondary metabolites in lichens.
  • 6. Oxidative stress. Reactive oxygen species. Main mechanisms of their formation and places of origin.
  • 7. Antioxidative compounds – overview and mechanisms of their action.
  • 8. Xanthophyll cyclus and its photoprotective function.
  • 9. Ascorbate and its functions in plants.
  • 10. Glutathione and its functions in plants.
  • 11. Tocoferols and tokotrienols.
  • 12. Antioxidative enzymes. Superoxid dismutase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, glutathione reduktase.
  • 13. Methods of pigments and antioxidants analysis: spectroscopy, chromatography.
