Course objectives
Plant taxonomy is a special lecture for students of systematic botany. Main objectives can be summarized as follows: to understand the basic principles of classification and nomenclature of plants to understand and analyse classicication criteria to analyse the main taxonomic methods using case studies
Syllabus
  • Variability of plants; units and taxa, definition of species and intraspecific taxa of Higher plants. Statical species delimitation: habitus, morphlogy, anatomy, karyology, genomic and molecular features. Dynamic delimitation: variability vers. phenotype plasticity, modes of reproduction, phenology and flower biology, climatic and ecological species preferences, geographic distribution, vikariance and modes of dissemination. Native interspecific hybridization and polyploidization: research and detection methods. Basic principles of botanic nomenclature and phytography (ICBN, description, diagnosis, synonymy, protologue, exsicates, homonymy, type taxa, nomenclatural combination, nomen conservandum, n. novum, n. ambiguum, n. illegitimum; application of code, important abbreviations in taxonomic literature, genus, infrageneric taxa, suprageneric taxa, nomenclature of cultivated plants; taconomic literature: IK, TTL, BPH, monography, conspect, flora, determination key and its principles, enumeratio, journals and internet resources for taxonomy, biosystematics and nomenclature of plants
