Course objectives
After completing this course the student will be able to:
understand authentic texts/lectures on Earth Science
identify the main ideas
formulate the main ideas
summarize a scientific/geologic text
interpret the information from the text/lecture
identify causes and effects
use terminology of the course topics
define the terms of the course topics
describe processes (weathering, erosion, deposition, volcanic and earthquake activities)
characterize land shapes
explain the theory of plate tectonics
compare and contrast using the proper terminology and academic vocabulary
present the topics of the course using basic presentation techniques
discuss one´s study plans
apply acquired skills in academic English to new topics

  • Earth processes:
  • Weathering - physical and chemical; soil profiles, mass wasting
  • Erosion by running water and wind; The formation of a river valley; Controlling erosion and slides;
  • Deposition by running water, by gravity and wind;
  • Glaciers;
  • Volcanoes;
  • Earthquakes - origin and damage; Folds and faults
  • Plate tectonics;
  • GPS;
  • CV and job application letters
  • Academic vocabulary in use

Teaching methods
foreign language course: text analysis reading/listening comprehension exercises pronunciation and grammar exercises field and academic vocabulary exercises presentations using basic presentation technique and discussion terminology, useful vocabulary and definitions support - blended learning (interactive materials in IS MU, drill in IS MU)
Assessment methods
7 ROPOTs and a credit test. 80% attendance in the seminars is required.
