Course objectives
The subject gives an introduction to ecology of teleost fishes, with emphasis to understand (a) diversity in fish life strategies, (b) functional adaptations to their environment, (c) feeding and (d) reproductive strategies and (e) the importance of biotic interactions in aquatic environment that affect fish biology.
Syllabus
  • 1) Introduction - diversity of teleost fishes, adaptations to habitat, 2) Sampling methods - passive sampling methods, active sampling methods, marking, echosounding, telemetry, fisheries statistics, 3) Feeding - trophic categories in fish, morphological adaptations, diet composition, 4) Growth and age - definition of growth, measurement of growth, factors affecting growth, methods of age estimation, 5) Spatio-temporal distribution - study methods, diel activity, spatial distribution, migration, 6) Reproduction - reproductive strategy, reproductive guilds, reproductive behaviour, fecundity, alternative reproductive strategies, parental care, 7) Behaviour - social structure, shoaling behaviour, territoriality, 8) Biotic interactions - predation, cannibalismus, competition, mutualism, 9) Fish parasites - importance of virus, bacteria and protozoa, importance of metazoan parasites, impact to individuals, impact to population, fishes as parasites, 10) Population dynamics - definition of population, estimation of fish abundance, population, dynamics, mortality, regulation mechanisms, production, 11) Fish assemblages - speciess richness, factors affecting species diversity, dynamics of fish assemblages, examples of fish assemblages.
