Knowledge level of the basic courses of general, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry. - Course Enrolment Limitations
- The course is offered to students of any study field.
- Course objectives
- The course gives students:
the basic overview of the most important synthetic methods currently used for the synthesis of metallic and nonmetallic inorganic materials, such as high-temperature solid state reactions, solid-gas reactions, coprecipitation method, hydrothermal synthesis, supramolecular templating, and sonochemical method;
basic hands-on experience in characterization techniques that are applied to the prepared samples, such as X-ray powder diffraction, analysis of the specific surface area by the BET method, thermal analysis, solid state NMR spectroscopy, optical and scanning electron microscopy, and testing of mechanical properties of solids. - Syllabus

- Teaching methods
- The course C8870 is organized as practical experiments carried out at different laboratories during the semester. Students sign up to groups consisting of 3-4 members. According to their interests, they select six experiments out of 13 offered. A balance between synthetic and analytical techniques should be maitained. Students will carry out the tasks in selected laboratories of the Department of Chemistry and Geology. The experiment 12 Mechanical properties of solids will consist of joint trip to the Mechanical testing laboratory of Departent of Mechanical Engeneering BUT which is equipped for these particular experiments.
- Assessment methods
- Teacher tests individually the students on fundamental knowledge before the start of each experiment. After the experiments, the students elaborate the laboratory protocols which are then graded. There is a written final test at the end of course concerning principles of all experiments.
