Course objectives
The approach to the Landscape is ecosystematic, with terrain identifications of landscape entities, analysis and interpretations, evaluation and proposals of landscape improvement; Main objectives can be summarized as follows: to receive basic information about living organismus funkcion in the Landscape; to understand relations of organismus to abiotic factors; to be aple to identify landscape structure; to understand to principles of Ecological networks and rules of their proposals; to recognize common woods in Czechia and their ecological requirements.

  • 1. Landscape of the Earth, global space structure.
  • 2. Natural landscapes of the Earth - zonobiomes, orobiomes, geobiomes.
  • 3. Introduction to Ecology for geographers I. - ecological valence, optimum.
  • 4. Introduction to Ecology for geographers II. - ecological conditions and ecological factors.
  • 5. Introduction to the Ecology of Landscapes.
  • 6. Anthropogenous factors of Landscape evolution.
  • 7. Ecosystems, Succession.
  • 8. Vegetational tiers of Central Europe, examples of Landscape types, their ecological features and problems.
  • 9. Structure of the Landscape acording to Forman and Godron.
  • 10. Skeleton of ecological Landscape stability, ecological networks.
  • 11. Legislative protection of the Nature and the Landscape in the Czech Republic, protected areas. History of nature and landscape protection in the Czech Republic.
  • 12. Half-day excursion to surroundings of Brno with distinguishing of Landscape types, types of ecosystems and their use.

Teaching methods
Lectures are held with help of powerpoint presentations with many picture illustrations. Part of the class exercises is replaced by terrain excursion - with active cooperation of the students. During the course students elaborate terrain project (mapping of a landscape).
Assessment methods
Exam is done by written test. It must be at least on level "E" anyway. Quality of the terrain project gives cca 20% of final course mark. Recognization of common woods in Czechia (on computer screen) gives another cca 20% of final mark. Quality of collaboration in excercises give cca 10% of the final course mark. To obtain the possiblility to attend the exam, students have to present their notes from the excursion to the seminar tutor.
