Course objectives
The aim of the course is to give students a chance to understand the basic conditions and processes of landscape evolution. The other aim is to connect knowledges from specialized geographical scineces to the complex understanding of the Landscape. The approach to the Landscape is ecosystematic, with terrain identifications of landscape entities, analysis, interpretations and evaluation in context of sustainable development (life).
Learning outcomes
Main objectives can be summarized as follows: to receive basic information about living organisms function in the Landscape; to understand relations of organisms to abiotic factors; to be able to identify landscape structure; to recognize common woods in Czechia and their ecological requirements.

  • 1. Landscape of the Earth, global space structure.
  • 2. History of approaches to ecological understanding of landscapes.
  • 3. Introduction to Ecology for geographers I. - ecological valence, optimum.
  • 4. Introduction to Ecology for geographers II. - ecological conditions and ecological factors.
  • 5. Introduction to Ecology for geographers III. - impact of chemical properties of bedrocks to character of ecosystems.
  • 6. Introduction to the Ecology of landscapes.
  • 7. Anthropogenous factors of Landscape evolution.
  • 8. Ecosystems, Succession.
  • 9.Vegetational tiers of Central Europe, examples of Landscape types, their ecological features and problems.
  • 10. Structure of the Landscape according to Forman and Godron.
  • 11. Legislative protection of the Nature and the Landscape in the Czech Republic, protected areas. History of nature and landscape protection in the Czech Republic.
  • 12. A Half-day excursion to surroundings of Brno with distinguishing of Landscape types, woods, types of ecosystems and their use.

Teaching methods
Lectures are held with help of powerpoint presentations with many picture illustrations. Three of the class exercises are replaced by terrain excursion - with active cooperation of the students. During the course students as a homework elaborate terrain project (mapping of a choosen landscape). Problems and results they discuss during class exercises. Learning of selected wood species and of altitudinal vegetation tiers is subject of self-studium with help of powerpoint presentations a posibility of discussing problems during seminars.
Assessment methods
Exam is done by written test with 7 questions. Student must gain at least 37 points of 70 possible ones. Thus evaluation of the test must be at least on level "E". Quality of the terrain project gives cca 20 % of final course mark. Recognization of common woods in Czechia (on computer screen) gives another cca 20 % of final mark. Quality of collaboration in excercises gives cca 10 % of the final course mark. To obtain the credit, students have to present their notes from the excursion to the seminar tutor too.
