Course objectives
At the end of the course the students obtain: introduction to environmental information and their specification in the context of public access of environmental information in the Czech Republic,
European Union and the world.
Definition of environmental information system (IS) principles of monitoring of environmental data together with main principles of the development of environmental IS.
Overview of the National environmental information system of the Czech Republic developed by the Ministry for Environment and Shared environmental information system of European union developed by EEA are discussed.
Syllabus
  • Environmental information and their specification.
  • Monitoring and prosessing environmental data.
  • Public access to environmental information in the Czech Republic,
  • European Union and the world.
  • Definition of information system (IS) and its specification in environment protection. Metadata and metainformation system.
  • The main principles of the development of environmental IS in the state administrative of the Czech republic and in municipal government (standards and interoperability in EU; database, mapping and GIS technology; structure and hierarchy IS following from the Czech legislation in IS and its harmonization with European Union, OECD and UN ones).
  • Database structures and functions of environmental IS for monitoring and reporting in waste and water management, air, soil and biodiversity protection (type of processed data, registers, parameters and their relationships) and horizontal and vertical data and information flows.
  • Single environmental IS used by the Ministry of Environment and maintained by ministry institutes (Czech Envinronmental Information Agency, Czech Hydrometrological Institute, Water Research Institute, etc). Shared environmental IS (SEIS) and its development in EU, data centers of EEA, EIONET.
  • Company information system for waste management, its functions and database structure. Waste management reporting.
  • Annual project of analysis and design of Internet environmental IS.

Lectures supplemented by annual project of analysis and design of simple web environmental IS.
