Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to use modern anthropological methods for study of human skeletal material.
Syllabus
  • 1. Minimum number of individuals. Maximum number of individuals.
  • 2. Sex determination from skeletal material. Morphoscopic and mophometric methods.
  • 3. Age determination from skeletal material.
  • 4. Osteometry. Skull orientation. Anthropological instruments. Measurement technique.
  • 5.Estimation of stature. Demonstration of selected methods.
  • 6. Reconstruction of appearance according to the skull. Work with dioptrograph.
  • 7.-8. DNA-sex determination. Principles of genetic analysis. Sampling. Sex markers (SRY gene, amelogenin). PCR, real-time PCR. Electrophoresis.
  • 9. Cremation. Demonstration of burnt bones.
  • 10. Paleopathology.Osteophytes, porotic hyperostosis, Schmorl's nodes. Deformation of skeleton, fractures, cutting wounds, gunshot wounds. Cancer. Dental caries, dental stone, periodontitis.
  • 11. Non-metric markers on skeleton and dentition. Demonstration of anatomical variety on skeletal material.
  • 12. Paleoserology. Basic methods. Determination of blood groups(demonstration in laboratory).
