- Course objectives
- Aim of the course is to make familiar students with modern anthropological methods. At the end of the course the sutdents will be able to apply anthropological methods on human skeletal material.
- Syllabus
- 1. Aims and skills of skeletal anthropology. Types of burials. Influences on preservation of skeletal materiál in soil and its connection with preservation of human skeletons.
- 2. Basic of anthropometry. Orientation on human body. Antropological measures. Technic of measurement. Anthropologal instruments. Basics of craniometry. Antropometric landmarks at skull. Measures on skull. Basics of measurement of postcranial skeleton.
- 3. Sex diagnosis. Sexual dimorphism. Influence of age on sexual diagnosis. Morphometric a morphoscopis methods at pelvis. Morphometric a morphoscopis methods at skull. Sexing other bones of human postcranial skeleton. Sexual diagnosis using theeth. Genetic methods for determining sex.
- 4. Determining age at death. Biological age contra chronological age. Problems in determining age. Methods of determining age in children. Methods of determining age in adults.
- 5. Rekonstruction of height of stature. Metods. Problems.
- 6. Demographic reconstruction of structure of historical populations. Computing of demographic tables and its interpretation.
- 7. Basics of paleopathology. Methods of paleopathological study. Differencial diagnostics. Oweview of most frequent diseases and injuries found in skeletal material.
- 8. Study of markers of professional stress at skeletal remains.
- 9. Paleodiet rekonstruction. Metods of trace element analysis, stable isotopes of C and N. Mikroabsion of dental enamel.
- 10. Migrations. Metods using strontioum isotopes, haplotypes of mitochondrial DNA.
- 11. Face reconstruction of the skull. Method of Gerasimov. Graphic reconstruction, plastic reconstruction. Diferences in facial reconstruction in historical and recent skeletal material.
- 12. Study of kinship. Epigenetic traits on skeleton and on teeth. Possibilities of use of genetic methods. Advantages and disadvantages of kiship studies. Limiting factors.
- 13. Paleoserology. Determining of serological traits by methos AE and AI. Using of genetic methods of determining of blood groups. Advantages and disadvantages of use of individual methods.
- 14. Study of secondary burials. Computing minimum number of individuals and maximum number of individuals.
