- Course objectives
- At the end of this course, student will know methods of ecological risk analysis and assessing the impact of contamination on ecosystems. Students should be able to: • define procedures of methods of ecological risks assessment • characterize and quantify the significance of the potential risks • apply basic methods of ecological risks assessment • solve practical examples of environmentally relevant risk scenarios (case studies)
- Syllabus
- Introduction - defining the field of ecological risk assessment, basic concepts: risk characterization and prioritization of risks, risk assessment. Basic methodical scheme of risk assessment: hazard evaluation, exposure assessment, evaluation of the effect, risk characterization, risk management. Analysis of exposure: general patterns of exposure assessment. Analysis of exposure: The fate of substances in the environment, chemical analysis and bioassays in risk assessment, biomonitoring. Analysis of exposure: Methodology and models, mathematical models of chemical transport and fate of substances. Analysis of effect: General principles, dose – response relationship. Analysis of effect: Toxicity tests - water, sediment and aquatic tests, extrapolation of the data, modeling the effects on the ecosystem. Risk characterization. Methodology of comprehensive evaluation, methods of multi-criteria evaluation, Analysis of site-specific risk, TRIAD approach and the weight of evidence (Weight of Evidence) Risk management, Legislation in the Czech Republic and worldwide(EIA, assessment of environmental damage) Case studies presentation – semester projects (each student will have original study)

- Teaching methods
- Education is performed as lectures with Powerpoint prezentation. Understanding of mechanisms and consequences is emphasized. Students are encouraged to get involved in discussion on the presented topics. The course includes e-learning material in the form of sylabus at is.muni.cz. Students perform independent seminar project.
- Assessment methods
- Attendance of the lectures is not mandatory but very strongly recommended for fluent understanding of the educated subjects. Part of the class is also a seminar project. The final evaluation will be based on a final written test at the end of semester.
