Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide the students with basic theoretical as well as practical knowledge necessary to effectively utilize computers for chemical experiments and to analyze the acquired data from these experiments. The student will be oriented in the problematics of computer use for instrument control and data acquisition, will gain basic knowledge of digital and analog electronics, will know basic programming in LabView.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to measurement in chemistry. Measurement chain, sensors 2. Digital computers and their utilization for data acquisition. Computer hardware - buses, ports, multifunction data acquisition cards - manufacturers, parameters. Operational systems, multitasking, threading. 3. Transformation of non-electrical quantities into electrical, interconnection of instruments (impedance matching). Operational amplifiers. 4. DA and AD conversion, Sample and Hold circuits, AD/DA resolution, interpolation. 5. Computer interfaces RS 232-C, CENTRONICS, IEEE 488 - GPIB, USB - characterization, communication principles. Measuring chains - PXI, VXI etc. 6. Digital technology - logical states, numerical systems, logical circuits. 7. LabView - Event driven programming. Introduction to "virtual instrumentation". 8. LabView programming (contd.), alternative programming instruments (VisiDaq etc.). 10. Counters and timers. Data analysis and signal processing. Fourier transformation, signal filtering, convolution, frequency characteristics.
