- At the end of the course students should be able to: using basic methods of the detection and measurement of ionizing radiation; handling of sources of ionizing radiation; measuring properties of ionizing radiation; be able separate and describe properties of selected radionuclides. Be familiar with the Czech law concerning handling sources of ionizing radiation and with principles of radiation protection.
- Syllabus
- 1. Radiation safety and principles of radiation protection.
- 2. Errors in measurement of radioactivity.
- 3. Scintillation probe dead time.
- 4. Crystal scintillation probe.
- 5. Gamma spectroscopy with crystal probe.
- 6. Absorption of gamma and beta radiation.
- 7. Self-absorption of beta radiation.
- 8. Determination of the half-life of a short-lived radionuclide.
- 9. Determination of the half-life of a long-lived radionuclide.
- 10. Determination of degree of enrichment of uranium compounds.
- 11. Radioactive equilibrium.
- 12. Measurements of volume activity of radon.
- 13. Alpha spectroscopy.
- 14. Measurements of low-energy beta radiation by methods of liquid scintillation.
