Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to: using basic methods of the detection and measurement of ionizing radiation; handling of sources of ionizing radiation; measuring properties of ionizing radiation; be able separate and describe properties of selected radionuclides. Be familiar with the Czech law concerning handling sources of ionizing radiation and with principles of radiation protection.
Syllabus
  • 1. Radiation safety and principles of radiation protection.
  • 2. Errors in measurement of radioactivity.
  • 3. Scintillation probe dead time.
  • 4. Crystal scintillation probe.
  • 5. Gamma spectroscopy with crystal probe.
  • 6. Absorption of gamma and beta radiation.
  • 7. Self-absorption of beta radiation.
  • 8. Determination of the half-life of a short-lived radionuclide.
  • 9. Determination of the half-life of a long-lived radionuclide.
  • 10. Determination of degree of enrichment of uranium compounds.
  • 11. Radioactive equilibrium.
  • 12. Measurements of volume activity of radon.
  • 13. Alpha spectroscopy.
  • 14. Measurements of low-energy beta radiation by methods of liquid scintillation.
