Course objectives
Students will obtain an overview about risk analysis in general and specifically about landsliding. Students will be informed about landslide hazard and area vulnerability assessment. Methods for landslide identification and study of landslide origination will be another topic. The students will be able to conduct, on the basis of theory and practice demonstrations, landslide mapping. They will also receive information on absolute and relative dating methods. Methods on landslide monitoring and mitigation will be introduced. Active landslides, their impacts and mitigation measures, will be demonstrated during the field trip.
Syllabus
  • Slope deformations and their importance for relief evolution. The role of landsliding within the current paradigm of landscape evolution. Which other landscape evolution scenarios exist? The origins of landslide research in the Czech Republic, the oldest known landslides.

  • The extent of landslide hazard in the Czech Republic, prominent landslides in CZ and around the world, landslide calamities and their consequences.

  • Methods for landslide identification, field mapping, data sources: aerial and remote sensing data analyses, geophysical and borehole survey. Other methods for landslide identification.

  • Natural and artificial factors causing landsliding, landslide susceptibility maps. Man-induced landslides. Use of landslide susceptibility maps and their topicality.

  • Landslide origination over a year, in relation to triggering factors, landslide phases: periods of intensive landslide activity, methods of landslide phases identification. The importance of archive data sources. Use of chronicles and other historical resources. Landslide phases in CZ, their causes and method of verification.

  • Spatial and temporal landsliding forecast: spatial analyses of landslide hazard use of GIS and statistical methods in rainfall triggering thresholds. Source of available meteorological data and its relevancy.

  • Landslide hazard modeling in GIS: data, methods, models: deterministic, stochastic, data uncertainty, landslide databases: Czech and European registry of landslides. Data consistency.

  • Landslide dating: absolute and relative dating, selection of a suitable method for landslide dating based on the time span and desired accuracy. Examples from CZ and the world.

  • Slope deformation monitoring, mitigation methods and stabilization of slopes. Examples of concrete mitigation measures, assessment of their efficiency.

  • Impact assessment of landsliding, area vulnerability analysis, landslide hazard and area vulnerability reduction.
  • Risk analysis in general and focused on landsliding: case study from the Outer Western Carpathians, preparation of the following field trip.

  • Field trip: one day, OWC, the village of Halenkovice and its vicinity. Demonstration of actual landslides: active and dormant, landslide mitigation and losses from landsliding.
