- Course objectives
- The lecture is focused on chemistry and methods for conservation and restoration of objects made from glass, ceramics and stone. Students are acquainted with raw materials that are used in the process of production.
- Syllabus
- BUILDING MATERIALS.
- GYPSUM. Production, hardening, properties of hardened bonding agents, technical gypsum products, quality classes according to Czech standards, utilization.
- LIME. Air lime. Production, properties, slacking, storing, carbonatation, quality classes according to Czech standards, utilization. Hydraulic lime. Production, characteristics according to hydraulic module, reaction with water, quality classes according to Czech standards, utilization.
- Cements on portland sintered clay base. Production, properties, hydration, kinetics, properties of mixed cements, quality classes according to Czech standards, utilization.
- Special inorganic bonding agents. Low-energy binding agents. Aluminate cement, production, properties, hydration, utilization.
- Magnesium bonding agents, production, properties, utilization.
- CERAMICS.
- History of ceramics and china, typology of prehistoric and early historic ceramics, types of ceramic products, technology of production, possibilities how to influence properties.
- Ceramics decorating, production defects, factors causing damaging of ceramics.
- GLASS.
- History of glass production, glass sorts, special properties, molten glass production, product formation.
- Decorating, production defects, factors causing damaging of glass
- Conservation and restoration of glass. Protection and care of ceramics and glass, cleaning, gluing, filling-up, fastening, retouche, conditions for depositing and handling.
- STONE
- Conservation and restoration of stone. Object investigation, stone cleaning, fastening, impregnation, stone protection against water, artificial stone, mastics.
- History of stone. Great Moravian period, Roman style, Gothic, Renaissance, baroque, rococo, empire, romantic historicism, historical styles, modern style, functionalism, cubism, constructivism.
- Reasons and sources of stone damaging. Rocks, corrosion. Influence and significance of a crust. Influence of a production way and working. Corrosion of arenaceous marl, sandstone, limestone,and marble.
- Stone buildings, other buildings, ruins, protection against biological destruction, treatment of soils by silicon agents (silicatization), agents for stone surface cleaning, hydrophobization of masonry, buildings made from plasticized clay. Protective-decorative treatment of facade.
- Damaging, conservation, and restoration of buildings made from concrete and armoured concrete. Ways of building stabilization. Gluing of sculpture fragments. Hydrophobization and fastening of concrete and armoured-concrete surfaces.
