- Course objectives
- Students will learn about the taxonomy and ecological requirements of individual invertebrate, particularly insect taxa in the Czech fauna from demonstrations of each taxon alive directly in its natural habitat. Students will also acquire basic skills related to field surveys in entomology: they will use several sampling methods in the field and learn how to mount insects in the lab. The field course in entomology is complementary to the courses Bi6760 "Entomology" and Bi8780 "Insect systematics and phylogeny" which are based on lectures and lab practicals but not field work.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course, students should be able to:
- recognize individual insect orders and their common, as well as some rare species in the Czech fauna;
- concisely characterize natural conditions of the sites visited during field excursions;
- interpret the occurrence of insect taxa recorded in the field in the context of their biology and ecology;
- use some basic methods for sampling of insects in the field (eg., sweeping, sifting, sampling of aquatic habitats, targeted searching);
- mount insect specimens collected and set up an own insect collection. - Syllabus
- The field course includes two to three days of field work at selected sites with species rich and characteristic insect fauna (usually various localites in South Moravia). During the excursions, general natural conditions of each locality are presented and the whole group of teachers and students surveys it for insects. Insects collected are partly identified and demonstrated to students directly in the field. Individual participants of the course are responsible for taking notes and compiling a list of selected taxa recorded at each site. Next one day is spent in the lab where students give a short oral presentation on species recorded and learn how to mount, preserve and identify insects.

- Assessment methods
- To pass the course, students have to be present at field excursions (2-3 days per semestr during week-ends) and the workshop in the lab (1 day) and to compile a list of taxa recorded during the excursions following the instructions of lecturers.
