Course objectives
This seminar will prepare the students of bachelor study programs (2nd year) of biochemistry for realization of the bachelor thesis: Introduction to sources of biochemical information and preparation of research publications and bachelor thesis, research fields studied at the Department of Biochemistry and related research institutes providing bachelor thesis support.
Learning outcomes
After this course, the student will:
-have an information about research directions at Department of Biochemistry and at collaborating institutions in the frame of which the bachelor projects/theses will be offered
-will have an information about information sources in biochemistry and life science in general
-will have an information on the structure and rules of preparation of bachelor thesis
Syllabus
  • 1. Department of Biochemistry, Fac Sci MUNI: history and personalities, structure and current research.
  • 2. Rules of laboratory work: laboratory safety, work with genetically modified organisms and technical gases.
  • 3.-4. Information about the research fields at the Department provided by the research group leaders, opportunities for bachelor theses of the students.
  • 5. Information sources for biochemists - how to perform literature review: remote access to licensed sources (Eduroam, OpenVPN MUNI). Types of articles (Article, Review, Meeting abstract), books. Databases: Web of Science, SCOPUS, PubMed. Impact factor, journal rank (Q1-Q4). Licencing, open access. Conferences, societies. Social networks. Patents, intellectual property protection. Science evaluation system - peer review, publications, citations, H-index. Predatory journals and current development.
  • 6.-8. Information about the research topics of the collaborating research group leaders and opportunities for students within bachelor theses.
  • 9. Scientific writing: bachelor thesis - Dean's measure, rules for bachelor thesis preparation for biochemistry students. Rules of scientific writing in general. Citation managers (EndNote, EndNote Web, ZOTERO). Processing and data back-up at MUNI (Office 365, OneDrive). Other database sources.
  • 10. Practical repetition of knowledge using students' computers: OpenVPN, literature review, the work with citation managers, OneDrive. Scientific consistency: laboratory notebook, primary data, scientific ethics and professionality. Grant opportunities. Career in science.
