Prerequisites
NOW( E6050 Fate of Tox in Env )
Succesful credit for courses E5040 "Environment compartments and polution" and C4660 "Basic physical chemistry" is recommended. Simultaneous enrollment into the E6050 "Chemistry and fate of chemical compounds in environment" class is mandatory.
Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is also offered to the students of the fields other than those the course is directly associated with.
fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
Course objectives
The goal of this course is familiarize with basic physical-chemical calculations and their use in the ekotoxicology, environemental chemistry and environmental sciences in general.
Learning outcomes
After course completion students will be able to use simple physical-chemical relationships and models to describe processes in the environment (compounds distribution in various compartments, reaction kinetics, equilibria and transport between compartments).
Syllabus
  • 1. Concentration. Equation of state of ideal gases, calculation of parcial pressure, particle concentration of gaseous compounds.
  • 2. Zero- and first- order reaction kinetics; pseudo-first- and second-order reaction kinetics. Half-life, life time. Calculation of reaction rate of chemical and photochemical reactions in atmosphere; and from the real data. Approximation of stationary state in atmospheric chemistry and photochemistry.
  • 3. Chemical equilibrium. Solubility equilibrium. Gases solubility, Henry constant. pH of water in euilibrium with air.
  • 4. Transport of coumpounds between compartments. Rate of transport, reaction rate. Calculation of polutant concentration in equilibrium between compartments.
  • 5. Phase equilibrium water/air. Calculation of concentrations and residence time or life time of (semi)volatile compound in water with chemical degradation or water exchange.
  • 6.Solubility in water, distribution coefficients between water and other phases. Calculation of Kow from increments. Fractionation of volatile compounds between phases and overall rate of transformation. Fugacity.
  • 7. Adsoprtion isotermae. Calculation from real-world data.
  • 8. Earth’s energy budget, estimation of green-house effect.

Teaching methods
This is a calculation oriented seminar. A strong emphasis in on the hands-on calculations of relevant examples and on understanding of mechanisms and consequences are key methods. Students are also encouraged to think about actual topics, discuss the results and used various calculation methods. They are also encouraged to ask questions and interact with the lecturer and their peers in the class.
In short: Calculation, discussion, home-work.
Assessment methods
Attendance of the seminars is mandatory and students should attend at least 75% of seminars.
Credits will be awarded based on the successful homework assessment and a final written test (at the end of semester) with a minimum pass-criterion of at least 50% of points.
Language of instruction
Czech
