Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The students will acquaint with basic types of biomaterials, especially polymeric, and their interactions with living organisms. Emphasis will be put on the knowledge of factors influencing the interaction of the biomaterials with cells and the possibilities of modification of the key material properties. Using case studies, students will get an overview of methodical approaches of problem solving and overview of current state of knowledge in the field of biomaterial development and testing.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to:
- define biomaterials and describe their interaction with living organism
- describe and understand biocompatibility tests
- suggest properties and application of biomaterials
Syllabus
  • Part 1: Examples of biomaterials and their use, definition of key concepts, types of biomaterials, surface and volume properties of biomaterials. Part 2: Biocompatibility testing methods, cellular mechanisms and key structures for targeted interaction with biomaterials, methods of material adjustments. Part 3: Case studies of research and development of biomaterials and their applications.
