- The course is also offered to the students of the fields other than those the course is directly associated with.
- fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
- there are 6 fields of study the course is directly associated with, display
- Course objectives
- The lectures are focused on plant cytology, histology, anatomy as well as physiology for students of non-biological programmes. At the end of the course, the students should be able to understand the basic structural features of a plant cells, tissues, and organs, as well as physiological mechanisms controlling plant growth and development.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of this course, students should be able:
- to compare specific traits of plant, bacterial, and animal cells;
- to descibe plant inner structure both on tissue and organ level;
- to understand the basic principles of physiological functioning of the vascular plants;
- to explain the relationship betwenn plant structure and functioning. - Syllabus
- Cytology: 1) Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell. Plant cell, structure and function. Cell wall, apoplast. Intercellular space. Plazmodesmata and symplast.
- 2) Vacuole. Microbodies (glyoxisomes, peroxisomes). Plastids, kinds of plastids. Chloroplasts - sites of photosynthesis, morphogenesis.
- Histology: 3) Tissues and their classification. Meristemic tissues. Vascular tissues: origin and types of vascular bundles, transport of assimilates, xylem and phloem: phylogenesis, ontogenesis, transfer cells.
- Organology: 4) Root: function, types of root systems, structure of root apex, primary and secondary structure of root (epidermis, cortex, central cylinder).
- 5) Stem: function, structure of stem apex, primary and secondary structure of stem (epidermis, cortex, central cylinder), monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous plants, structure of hypocotyl.
- 6) Leaf: function, origin, fall off, structure (epidermis, mezophyll), bifacial, monofacial, structure of needle, stomata and hydatodes. Transport of water, solutes and gases in plants, flux control. Physiologic approach to the study of metabolic processes in plants. Mineral nutrition of plants - uptake and use of nutrients. Growth processes in plants, phytohormones, external control of growth.Stress physiology: general and specific responses to stress factors.
