- Prerequisites
- Basic knowledge of chemistry and conservation of artifacts made of organic materials, especially paper, textile, and collagen materials.
- Course Enrolment Limitations
- The course is also offered to the students of the fields other than those the course is directly associated with.
- fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
- Chemistry of Conservation - Restoration (programme PřF, B-CH)
- Course objectives
- The lecture is focused on chemistry and the basic principles, procedures, and methods used in the conservation and restoration of objects made from organic materials (textiles, collagen materials). It includes the basics of textile production and technology, textile techniques, and technical terminology. It is focused on textile-technological surveys of objects and analyzes of textile materials, which are the basis for choosing subsequent procedures for conservation and restoration interventions.
- Learning outcomes
- Students will gain an overview of the chemical agents and methodologies used in this area of cultural heritage care.
- Syllabus
- TEXTILE
- 1: Textile – textile technology, basics of textile production and textile techniques, textiles in the collection funds of memory institutions.
- 2: Textile fibers - natural, metallurgical, chemical. Microstructure and macrostructure of plant and animal fibers. Long and flat textiles. Fabrics and knitwear, basic weaves of fabrics, textile terminology, types of textile fabrics - cotton, linen, woolen, and silk type fabrics.
- 3: Physical–chemical properties of textiles. Sorption of moisture, heat, light, mechanical, optical, electrical, and thermal properties
- 4: Identification and analysis of textile fibers, solubility, and resistance of fibers to chemical and physical influences. Fiber surface treatment, optically brightening agents
- 5: Causes of degradation and damage to textile materials - physical, chemical, and biological factors
- 6: Conservation and restoration of textile materials – textile-technological research (identification and analysis of textile materials, processing technology, fabric bindings), conservation/restoration methods and procedures
- COLLAGEN MATERIALS
- 7: Chemical and structural composition of the skin - chemical composition, histology, topography,
- 8: Production of leather, parchments, and furs - materials for production, production technology
- 9: Physico-chemical properties and causes of damage to collagen materials - physical, chemical, and biological factors
- 10: Properties and testing of collagen materials - determination of animal species, determination of production procedures and materials, determination of the degree of damage
- 11: Materials used for conservation
- 12: Principles of conservation and preventive conservation
