Course objectives
Students will be familiarised with the basic concepts and terms of the taxonomy of bacteria in the frame of this course. They will be able to understand contemporary classification, nomenclature and identification of bacteria (domain Bacteria) important in the human clinical microbiology.
Learning outcomes
On the basis of the acquired information the students will be able to interpret and understand data obtained during typing and identification of bacterial strains and allocate these strains in the frame of the current phylogenetic system.
Syllabus
  • The first part of the course deals with basic taxonomic concepts (classification, nomenclature and identification) and modern approaches to the characterisation of bacterial species and their phylogenetic delimitation. In further lectures, the current taxonomy of bacterial genera and species important in human clinical microbiology is discussed (representatives of the phyla Pseudomonadota, Bacillota, Actinomycetota, Bacteroidota, Spirochaetota, Mycoplasmatota, Fusobacteriota and Chlamydiota).
