Course objectives
The aim of the laboratory course is to study the basic properties of compounds involved in biochemical processes and methodological approaches to the study and analytical use of enzymes. The first part covers the qualitative and quantitative determination of carbohydrates, amino acids, proteins and nucleic acids. The second part deals with enzyme kinetics and further study of enzyme properties.
Learning outcomes
The students will be able to: - perform basic laboratory operations in a biochemical laboratory - operate common laboratory instruments used in a biochemical laboratory - mathematically evaluate measured data - interpret simple results of their work
Syllabus
  • Qualitative and quantitative determination of carbohydrates. Qualitative and quantitative determination of aminoacids. Quantitative determination of proteins. Isolation, analysis and determination of nucleic acids. Separation methods. Determination of enzyme activity. pH effect on enzyme reaction. Enzyme kinetics. Inhibition of enzymes. Enzymatic determination of metabolites. Substrate specifity of enzymes. Imobilization of enzymes. Respiratory chain chain of aerobic organisms. Photosynthesis.

Teaching methods
Laboratory course
Assessment methods
The first laboratory exercise is dedicated to the teaching of safety in the biochemistry laboratory. Students also write an entrance test, the successful completion of which is a condition for participation in the exercise. Before each subsequent exercise, a written test is given to check the student's preparation for the task. In all tests, including the placement test, the student must answer at least 50% of the questions correctly.
Language of instruction
