Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of work in a chemical laboratory; work with chemical glass, pipettes, acids and other chemicals. A course of ICP spectrometry, e.g. C9053 Determination of elements in geological materials by the ICP-OES method or C6300 Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission/Mass Spectrometry (ICP-AES, ICP-MS)is highly recommended but not required.
Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The subject is aimed to demonstrate analysis of liquid or decomposed solid samples with inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). Geological and also other samples will be analysed. Some topics from the theoretical course C9053 Determination of elements in geological materials by the ICP-OES methos will be practically demonstrated.
Learning outcomes
A student will be able to analyze liquid samples with ICP-OES, namely Thermo iCAP 6500 Duo; to prepare a set of appropriate calibration solutions and standard additions for a given geological or other sample; to identify and solve most frequent matrix effects and spectral interferrences in analysis of geological samples; to solve physical and technical limitations of the given ICP-OES; to compare results from ICP-OES with those from other techniques; to present results with appropriate statistical processing.
Syllabus
  • 1) Safety regulations, ICP-OES spectrometer Thermo iCAP 6500 duo, its construction and use, control software, spectrometer initialization and switch off; preparation of water samples, dilution, pipetting, calibration dependence: preparation of calibration standards using Astasol solutions; method creation and preparation, selection of elements, lines, background correction, checking for spectral interferences, spectrometer setting, measurement of calibration dependences, samples, results check, export, processing and presentation. 2) Decomposed limestone samples, preparation of blank solution, preparation of calibration standards from Astasol solutions, matrix matching of standards with addition of an acid and other components. Standard addition method. Measurement of standards and samples with ICP-OES Thermo iCAP 6500, comparison of radial and axial view, stability check, results check, data processing and results presentation. 3) Decomposed fused pellets and samples by the need of geologists – will be operatively changed. Calibration dependence and standard addition method. Measurement of standards and samples with ICP-OES Thermo iCAP 6500, comparison of radial and axial view, results check, data processing and results presentation, limit of detection, limit of quantification.
