Basic university level knowledge of general chemistry, physical chemistry and mathematics (contained in courses: C1020, C3420, M0001).

Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to:

A. consolidate the knowledge of the topics presented in the frame of physical chemistry lectures;

B. provide instructions on how to solve the typical computational exercises in physical chemistry;

C. actively practice the computational skills of students, including both proposals how to solve the exercises and their implementation
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to:

- to analyse the problems of calculations in physical chemistry;

- apply the acquired knowledge in solving practical problems and questions in the field of physical chemistry;

- propose and successfully implement the workflow for solving the calculations in physical chemistry;

- accurately explain the used formulae;

- to propose a method of teaching calculations in physical chemistry at secondary schools;
Syllabus
  • 1. Properties of gases. Relationship between temperature, pressure and volume of gas. Perfect gas equation.

    2. State variables, intensive and extensive properties, potential and kinetic energy, internal energy, heat capacities, enthalpy, thermochemistry.

    3. Expansion work, internal energy, enthalpy and entropy and their changes.

    4. Gibbs energy and its changes.

    5. Raoult's and Henry's law, partial pressure, activities, activity coefficients.

    6. Chemical equilibrium I. Equilibrium constant, enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs energy of reaction.

    7. Electrochemistry. Cells, half cells, reactions and half- reactions. Standard potentials, cell potential at given temperatures, equilibrium constant.

    8. Molecules in motion. Pressure and molecular speeds. Collision frequency, mean free path. Diffusion and Fick's Laws. Conductivity of electrolyte solutions.

    9. Kinetics I. Rates of chemical reactions, rate of reactant consumption and product formation, rate constant.

    10. Kinetics II Molecularity and reaction order, half-life of reaction.

    11. Chemical equilibrium II. Enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs energy of dissociation. Gibbs energy dependence on temperature.

    12. Phase diagrams: CO2, water-nicotine, ethanol-water, eutectic point, melt solidification. Solubility of solids. The relationship between Gibbs energy and the phase diagram.

    13. Structure. Revision of selected topics.

Teaching methods
calculatins of exercises, class discussion

In case the COVID-19 measure does not allow contact teaching, the teaching method will be adjusted as follows: teaching will be

1) conducted online in the MS Teams program or

2) mediated through recorded seminars (commented electronic presentations) or

3) realized by assigning homework with feedback in the next seminar.

If interested, the seminars will be supplemented by online consultations.
Assessment methods
During the semester, three tests of duration of about 15-20 minutes will be submitted to students. In each of the tests, 40% points must be scored. At the same time, it is necessary to obtain 60% of the total score from all 3 tests. Students have only writing tools available to complete the tests.

In case the COVID-19 measure does not allow contact teaching, the method of assessment will be adjusted as follows: students will be given homework (a set of tasks). After its proper elaboration, a credit will be awarded.
