Prerequisites
C9067 Trace element analysis of geological materials by ICP-MS I
C9067
Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The aim of the course is: - be able to solve specific problems in the analysis of geological samples by ICP-MS; - understanding the principle of solid sampling by laser ablation; - mastering the basic characteristics of the ablation system, its limits and possibilities of use; - learn to optimize the (LA) -ICP-MS method for a specific application; - learn to evaluate and process analytical data.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to: - evaluate the possibility of using the ICP-MS method for the analysis of a specific geological sample; - evaluate the applicability of a specific LA-ICP-MS system for the required application (trace analysis, imaging...); - set basic measurement parameters by LA-ICP-MS method (laser parameters, method settings...); - evaluate the results and evaluate the measured data.
Syllabus
  • - basic principle of laser ablation (LA); - individual parts of the LA system, their functions, principles, constructions; - application of LA-ICP-MS to geological samples - trace analysis, geochronology, element mapping, depth profiling ...; fractionation; - the procedure for evaluating the results.
Teaching methods
