Course objectives
First course of history of mathematics.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will have a basic overview of the history of mathematics.
Syllabus
  • The importance and position of the history of mathematics in the system of sciences. The main periods in the history of mathematics and the problems of its delimination. The prehistory of mathematics. The foundation of mathematics as a branch of science. The Hellenistic mathematics. 1. crisis of mathematics. Arab mathematics and its influence upon European mathematics in the Middle Ages. A significant change in the position of science in the 17th Century. The rise of the infinitesimal calculus. 2. crisis of mathematics. The rise of the modern mathematics in 19th Century. 3. crisis of mathematics and its consequences for the developement of mathematics in the 20th Century.
