Other software
There are numerous tools downloadable as Chrome extensions which make reading online easier and more convenient. They usually allow readers to customize the webpage by eliminating band advertisements, offering the reader pure text. In addition, they provide options concerning background colour, and the type and size of font.
Some of the most common are the following.
Snap&read
This is a text reader (TTS) that simplifies vocabulary, translates text, reads inaccessible text (OCR), and captures and cites sources. Among others, it can dynamically adjust the readability of text without changing the meaning. You can further pull text into an outline, then organize it and add notes.
Mercury Reader
The Mercury Reader extension for Chrome removes ads and distractions, leaving only text and images for a clean and consistent reading view on every site.
Read Bee
This Chrome extension provides an overlay to cover the screen offering several different colours for users to choose from. You can also modify the colour of the text to ease the strain on your eyes, enabling you to read longer texts.
Word Bank Universal
This software allows creation of word clouds and summaries. It provides core vocabulary that can be used for vocabulary development, spelling support, to gain the gist of an article, help in recalling previously learned words, and can be used to help support writing. Word Bank also summarizes and extracts important people, places, a timeline, and numbers from web pages.
Sprint Reader
Using a method of reading known as “Rapid Serial Visual Presentation”, this extension allows users to train to speed read at a rate of as many as 1800 words per minute.
