Study-related information
- Final state doctoral examination and defence of the doctoral thesisThe doctoral examination and the dissertation defense take place on different dates. The student is obliged to pass the doctoral examination no later than the end of the 7th semester of study.
The doctoral examination is public and takes place in front of a commission composed of experts in the given specialization, of which at least two are external. No later than 60 days before the examination, the doctoral student receives 9 questions from 3 thematic areas from the examination committee for preparation, then answers one question from each thematic area according to the choice of the committee members. The areas expand the specialization of the doctoral student and are focused primarily on orientation in the field and the ability to argue. The questions concern individual areas scientific training in synchronous and diachronic Slavic linguistics.
The dissertation defense. The doctoral dissertation is assessed by two experts, at least one of whom must be external. The defense is public and takes place before a commission composed of experts in the specialization, of which at least two are external. - Requirements of the studyThe standard period of study in the program is 4 years (8 semesters). In order to be eligible for the defense of a doctoral dissertation and the completion of studies, a doctoral student must obtain a total of at least 240 credits in the study credit system for successful completion of compulsory (175 credits), compulsory elective (35 credits) and elective (30 credits) subjects.
Compulsory study activities are common for all students in the program and, in addition to general and theoretical courses, include the student's own research and creative activities and their presentation. Compulsory courses also include the courses Philosophy for Doctoral Studies (PHDZ1) and English for Doctoral Studies (CJV_D_A).
A compulsory part of the study is a stay at a foreign university or other research institution chosen with regard to the dissertation topic and enabling consultations with foreign experts and research of current professional literature (compulsory course SLJAP08 Internship Abroad I). The stay abroad can be realized both once in one piece and (especially in the case of combined study) in the form of a maximum of two shorter stays of a recommended total duration of three months (but at least 30 days).
Compulsory subjects of the Dissertation Thesis (SLJAP10) and Doctoral Dissertation (SLJAP11) are related to the conclusion of the study. Other compulsory courses are focused on student training: General Methodology (SLJAP01), Doctoral Seminar (SLJAP02, repeatedly in odd semesters) and Specialization Seminar (SLJAP03, repeatedly in even semesters of study).
The student's creative activity and its presentations are represented by the compulsory subjects Publication of Special Text (SLJAP04), Review in a Professional Jorurnal (SLJAP05), Presentation at a Conference Abroad (SLJAP06), Presentation at a Conference in the Czech Republic / Slovakia (SLJAP07) and Grant Project (SLJAP08). Theoretical courses are represented among the compulsory subjects by the subject Characteristics of Slavic Languages (SLJAT02).
A compulsory part of the study is also the teaching of a specialized subject (SLJAV05) for students of bachelor's or master's studies in Slavic study programs related to the professional focus of a doctoral student, or conducting a final thesis in bachelor's or master's studies of Slavic study programs.
Within the compulsory elective courses, which are always specified in the student's individual study plan, the doctoral student chooses two theoretical subjects from two blocks with regard to the focus of the dissertation and after consultation with the supervisor, choosing at least one of three courses from each block: the block of methodological subjects offers courses General Linguistics (SLJAT01), Modern Linguistic Directions (SLJAT03) and Critical Discourse Analysis (SLJAT04); according to the language and areal focus of the dissertation, the doctoral student chooses from the courses Synchronous Confrontation of East Slavic Languages and Czech (SLJAT05), Synchronous Confrontation of West Slavic Languages (SLJAT06) and Synchronous Confrontation of South Slavic Languages and Czech (SLJAT07).
Compulsory elective courses also include another foreign language (except compulsory English) of the student's choice (French / German / Russian / Spanish for doctoral studies or another Slavic language, with the exception of the language of the field studied or the mother tongue).
The remaining 40 credits will be obtained by the student (according to the agreement with the supervisor) from the offer of elective courses, which includes other publishing activities, presentations at conferences, other internship abroad or grant activities. - Proposal of dissertation topics and topics of defended dissertationsLinguistic Analysis of the Political Language in Pre-election Campaigns in Bulgaria, Czechia, Croatia and Serbia.
