Study-related information
- Final state doctoral examination and defence of the doctoral thesisThe doctoral state exam within the programme English Linguistics focuses on the following three areas:
- selected topics in the history of the English language
- selected topics in modern linguistics with a focus on the student’s field of research
- the contribution of the Prague School to the development of linguistic research
The focus of the exam is on theoretical linguistics, especially topics in phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, sociolinguistics, pragmatics, and discourse analysis. It includes questions concerning the methodology of the research within these disciplines.
The defence is organized either on the same day or at a later date according to the recommendation of the supervisor. During the defence, the students present the theoretical background and the results of their dissertation, and respond to questions mentioned in the opponents’ reviews and to the questions of the examination committee. - Requirements of the studyThe key components of the study requirements are related to the preparation and composition of the dissertation, which represents a comprehensive scientific publication based on original research.
