Study-related information

  • Final state doctoral examination and defence of the doctoral thesis
The doctoral state exam within the programme English Linguistics focuses on the following three areas:
    - selected topics in the history of the English language
    - selected topics in modern linguistics with a focus on the student’s field of research
    - the contribution of the Prague School to the development of linguistic research
The focus of the exam is on theoretical linguistics, especially topics in phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, sociolinguistics, pragmatics, and discourse analysis. It includes questions concerning the methodology of the research within these disciplines.
The defence is organized either on the same day or at a later date according to the recommendation of the supervisor. During the defence, the students present the theoretical background and the results of their dissertation, and respond to questions mentioned in the opponents’ reviews and to the questions of the examination committee.
  • Requirements of the study
The key components of the study requirements are related to the preparation and composition of the dissertation, which represents a comprehensive scientific publication based on original research. Compulsory student activities are formulated in an individual study plan; in addition to a successful completion of doctoral courses, students are expected to pursue and present their own creative activities, especially to compose academic texts.
During their study, the students have to complete all the courses listed below representing 150 credits:
    AJ32020 Philosophy of Language
AJ32030 Conference Presentation in English I
AJ32031 Academic Publication in English I
AJ32036 Conference Presentation in English II
    AJ32041 Historical Linguistics
    AJ32042 Modern Linguistics
    AJ32055 Research Methodology
    AJ32061- AJ32068 Ph.D. Dissertation Seminars I - VIII
    AJ32070 International Research Stay I
    AJ32350 Doctoral Exam
    AJ38000 Doctoral Dissertation Summary
    AJ39000 Dissertation

The academic publication consists in a publication of a scholarly article in peer-reviewed journal of non-predatory character. The conference presentation represents a presentation in English of the student’s original paper at a national or international conference. The minimum length of the foreign Research Stay is one month. The recommended length is one semester. In justified cases the stay abroad can be substituted with another type of academic activity, for example participation in a workshop or a study attachment at an academic institute in the place of the student's residence.
In addition to the compulsory subjects listed above, students have to complete four compulsory-optional subjects representing the total of 60 credits (one course represents 15 credits). They can select four of the subjects listed below. Most of the subjects present theoretical linguistic topics.
    AJ32040 History of Linguistics
AJ32050 Selected Topics in Functional Syntax
AJ32051 Selected Topics in Pragmatics and Sociolinguistics
    AJ32052 Selected Topics in Semantics
    AJ32054 Selected Topics in Stylistics
    AJ32057 Translation Theory
    AJ32058 Discourse Analysis
    CJDSL001 Corpus Linguistics
    CJDSL002 Critical Data analysis I
The remaining 30 credits are covered by optional courses selected in agreement with the supervisor.
