Jiné omezení: This low-residency course is also offered to the PhD students of the fields other than those the course is directly associated with. The capacity limit for the course is 24 students. Maximum 12 per online seminar group, 6 per classroom seminar. - Cíle předmětu
- To complement the students’ work in the Academic Writing course, CJV_AP1 (students are strongly encouraged to register for both courses). The course helps students to: • Understand all the dimensions (body language, voice, content) of verbal communication in English • Appreciate speaker-audience relationship (using the audience for effective communication) • Have a sense for successful and unsuccessful graphic communication on a slide • Train in the mechanics of oral English (modulation, tempo, stress, chunking and pausing) • Use visual aids and props in a manner appropriate to the medium • Make full use of Questions and Answers • Give and receive feedback professionally

- Students will be able to: • Appreciate the distinction between the communicative role of a verbal presentation and that of a written article or paper • Adjust their presentation content to their audience • Adjust their body language to the presentation setting • Present in English employing all aspects of oral English appropriately • Compensate for accent ambiguities • Provide and receive feedback professionally in academic contexts

- The course covers the following topics (generally coinciding with seminar sessions): 1. The voice and oral delivery in English 2. The body and oral delivery in English 3. Presenting a favourite topic with an audience (two classroom sessions) 4. Slides for effective communication; Analysis of successful and unsuccessful presentations 5. Presenting your thesis topic to an audience (two classroom sessions) 6. The art of questions and answers 7. Business cards (two classroom sessions)
- Výukové metody
- All sessions proceed from students presenting assigned tasks (audio and video recordings of themselves and slide presentations) that become increasingly complex as the course progresses. Presentations are always followed by critique and feedback involving all participants.
- Metody hodnocení
- Assessment is continuous throughout the semester: Attendance and Active Participation (50%); Intermediate Presentations (30%); Final Presentation (20%). All work must be completed by the final teaching day of the semester.
