Cíle předmětu
The course aims at presenting foreign students with different forms that Czech literature and culture of the 20th century took. It will provide an overview of the historical development, significant cultural movements and groups positioned on the background of various media – literature,film, music, photography, architecture, and fine arts –, at the same time hinting at relevant European cultural context.

  • The topics will include:
  • 20th Century Czech cultural history;
  • Beginnings of the Czech Modern;
  • Good Soldier Schweik;
  • Depiction of war and holocaust in Czech literature and film;
  • 1960s: „The Joke“ in Kundera’s novel and its filmic adaptation;
  • Czech Nobel Prize winner Jaroslav Seifert;
  • Czech surrealism both before and after 1945;
  • Different forms of Czech exile writing: Josef Škvorecký and Ivan Blatný;
  • Lyrics in Czech popular / rock /alternative music;
  • Forms of Czech postmodern art and literature;
  • Ecriture feminine across generations: Milada Součková, Věra Linhartová, and Daniela Hodrová
