This course is for students who have a very low, basic knowledge of the English language or no previous knowledge of English language at all.

Course objectives
The course is intended for all Masaryk university students with hearing impairment. Completing this course will allow the students to register the SPA001 English for Students with Hearing Impairment I course. The course focuses on vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing as well as practical language. By the end of this Elementary course students should reach the A1 level (CEFR).
Syllabus
  • Lesson 1 – Where are you from? VOCABULARY: countries, nationalities, numbers; GRAMMAR: verb TO BE; personal pronouns; PRACTICAL LANGUAGE: saying hello and goodbye
  • Lesson 2 - That's my bag! VOCABULARY: everyday objects, describing people, family; GRAMMAR: singular and plural, articles, possessive pronouns; WRITING: my family; PRACTICAL LANGUAGE: colours
  • Lesson 3 - What do you have for breakfast? VOCABULARY: common verbs, jobs, food; GRAMMAR: present simple tense; WRITING: introducing yourself by email; PRACTICAL LANGUAGE: telling the time
  • Lesson 4 - Do you like mornings? VOCABULARY: daily routine, adverbs of frequency; GRAMMAR: word order in questions; can; WRITING: My favourite meal; PRACTICAL LANGUAGE: money; buying coffee
  • Lesson 5 - What do you like doing? VOCABULARY: hobbies & Interests; town & city; directions; GRAMMAR: like + verb + -ing; WRITING: describing a friend; PRACTICAL LANGUAGE: hobbies; giving directions
  • Lesson 6 - A night in a haunted castle VOCABULARY: furniture; prepositions; GRAMMAR: there is; object pronouns; WRITING: my house; PRACTICAL LANGUAGE: at a hotel

Assessment methods
Students are allowed two absences in a semester. Absence needs to be previously arranged and approved by the teacher. Additional absences need to be evidenced. One of the prerequisites for the completion of the course is home preparation and doing assignments. Students must sit for the end-of-course test (60 % pass).
