Course objectives
Cities, metropolises, urban agglomerations, metropolitan areas or urban areas in general are the decisive driving force of the world economy, the bearers of new innovations and dynamic changes in technological progress. The aim of the course is to acquaint students with selected aspects of the development of the urban environment in terms of historical and contemporary development and development towards social, economic and spatial restructuring, globalization and urban planning. The basic concepts of urban development in the form of an industrial and post-industrial city, a cultural and creative city, or the rise and the fall of the city are also discussed. Last but not least, the course discusses the image of cities and their sustainability and emphasizes cities as important tourist destinations. Conceptual and theoretical approaches are complemented by case studies and examples from specific urban environments.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student should be able to: - define the basic terms and concepts related to the functioning of cities, urban development, and the urban environment; - explain the development and current state of the dynamics of the urban environment, urban planning, and urbanism; - identify and describe the basic transformation processes shaping the urban environment, the rise and the fall of the city; - analyze the impacts of economic, social, and environmental changes on the urban environment; - interpret the sustainable development of cities in relation to their future.

Teaching methods
Teaching takes the form of tutorials and related discussions on the topics presented. The ability of self-study is supposed. Seminars are not considered.
Assessment methods
The exam will take the form of a written test consisting of 20 closed and open questions. At least 50% of the points will be needed to pass the exam. Seminar work will not be required.
