Course objectives
Introduction to Applied Philosophy (ZAPF) The course will particularly focus on the basics of philosophy and ethics (especially on economic ethics) as knowledge of these disciplines is important both for students' future careers and for a deeper understanding of special economic disciplines. The objective is to review basic trends and to stimulate students to independent orientation in solving social, economic and moral problems. Major topics include: Importance of philosophy for solving civic and economic problems. Practical philosophy and its relation to scientific disciplines. Values, norms and principles. Freedom, authority, power. Justice. Tolerance and fanaticism. Is there universal morality? Contrast of ethics and moralising. Ethic anthropocentrism, biocentrism, holism. Process of moral appraisal. Ethics of economy and business ethics. Competition and co-operation, profit or morality? Ethical aspects of discrimination at work and those of unemployment. Ethics and ecology in relation to enterprise. Do we have moral responsibility for living conditions of future generations including the effects of long life expectancy and population explosion? The content has several common topics and is co-ordinated with the related courses Introduction to Political Science, Sociology for Economists and Macroeconomics I. Examination: written test, oral examination.
