- Course objectives
- The basic course of Academic skills in English I is designed for doctorate students and academic workers. On the course, participants will gain
• an overview of basic principles of academic language
• ability to apply theoretical principles of academic language to their own production
• ability to critically view and evaluate specialised texts
The course is followed up by a course of Academic skills in English II in spring term, which further enhances the skills and knowledge gained on the course. - Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course, students will be able to formulate their ideas and views in written and spoken discourse and provide constructive feedback to written and spoken discourse

- 1. socialising/small talk; academic wordlist introduction
- 2. presentation techniques; reading strategies
- 3. listening for main idea, listening for detailed information
- 4. listening to a lecture, note-taking
- 5. summarising, paraphrasing; spoken punctuation
- 6. coherence and cohesive devices
- 7. focusing on the genre
- 8. critical thinking activities
- 9. presenting figures, describing graphs
- 10. academic discussions
- 11. writing topic sentences
- 12. writing paragraphs
- 13. round-up activities, discussions, mini-presentations

- class, group and pair discussion, interactive seminars, online activities
- Assessment methods
- Successful completion of this course involves giving a mini-presentation and writing a short essay; active participation in seminar activities, participating in the wiki activities, 80% attendance.
