- Předpoklady
- The course will be offered to post-second year Computer Science/Informatics students, so it is a course for students having some previous experience with server management and operating systems.
The specific prerequisites for this course are:
- Internet access is required for every lab session. If a class is not in a computer lab, students should provide their own laptop with Internet access.
- A good understanding of spoken and written English.
- Omezení zápisu do předmětu

- Cíle předmětu
- Goal of this course is to introduce mainframes servers (IBM zSeries) to students of informatics. They will get familiar with basic principles of operation on mainframes and learn basic administration techniques of mainframe operating system zOS. Course consist of theoretical lectures followed by practical exercises during lab sessions. Students will learn basics of the operating system, zSeries SW and HW, database and transaction systems, networking, monitoring and performance tuning.
- Osnova
- Introduction of zSeries servers, operating systems running on mainframes, daily use.
- zSeries HW - history, zSeries processor types, Storage models, latest mainframe server generation detailed presentation
- zSeries SW - main administration panels, TSO and ISPF interface, security RACF, basic commands to navigate and operate zOS
- zSeries data management - datasets overview, storage subsystem, routines for data management
- Job Entry Subsystem, System Display and Search Facility, Job control language, JCL utilities
- zSeries transaction server
- HW availability - Parallel Sysplex, Geographically dispersed parallel sysplex, Coupling facility, Logger
- zSeries database systems - DB2 and IMS
- Programming languages for zOS - REXX, assembler, C++, COBOL
- zSeries administration - monitoring tools, data analysis tool, performance tuning tools
- IPL - initial programme load, Hardware management console, zVM
- Workshop at IBM DC Brno
- Summary and open discussion related to zSeries servers, zOS, zVM or zLinux
- Výukové metody
- Lab sessions combining some lecturing of theory from the RedBook: Introduction to the New Mainframe: z/OS Basics with exercises on test environment Zeus
- Metody hodnocení
- Students will collect points for completing lab sessions. Additionally at the end of semester a 60 minute test will be taken. It will cover the whole syllabus including questions oriented to students’ full understanding of the environment. Initially, the proportion between points gained during the semester and in the final test will be 60:40 but it may be changed after the pilot run if it shows not to be appropriate.
