- Course objectives
- At the end of the course students should be able to understand various types of psychotherapy research, research designs and instruments; find, process and critically assess empirical findings in psychotherapy; summarize and interpret main empirical findings in psychothearpy; connect research and practice; be able to aim for research-informed practice.
- Syllabus
- 1. Historical and social context of psychotherapy research. Main kinds of psychotherapy research. Outcome research: RCT, neturalistic studies, the control group problem. 2. Examples of outcome studies. 3. Outcome research: cumulative analysis, main research findings, Dodo bird effect, dose-effect relatiohsnip, deterioration effect. Common factors and their relationship to techniques. 4. Measurement of psychotherapy change: instruments, the concepts of statistically reliable and clinically significant change, monitoring systems, feedback-informed therapy. 5. Psychotherapy process research: process-outcome studies, task analysis, process research. Aptitude-treatment interaction (ATI) design. 6. Helpful and hindering events in the therapeutic process. 7. Instruments for intensive psychotherapy process research. 8. Case studies: types of case studies, N=1 research. 9. Qualitative research in psychotherapy: approaches in qualitative research, examples of empirical studies. 10. Research on psychotherapist development and psychotherapy trainings. Choice of theoretical orientation. Therapist effect. 11. Psychotherapy methods in practice: Results of a survey on Czech psychotherapists. 12. Research in practice: utilizing research in psychotherapy practice, action and collaborative research, practice research networks, examples.

- Lectures explaining and illustrating the methods and results of psychotherapy research, practical demonstrations.
- Assessment methods
- In the course of the semester, students prepare a presentation of a selected empirical study. The course is concluded with a written exam.
