Course objectives
The aim of the seminar is to present the Second World War in Europe, its immediate aftermath and coping with its legacy in the collective memory of European nations through the analysis of contemporary textual sources and especially visual and film material.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will gain the ability to: - understand the significance of World War II for the development of Europe after 1945, - understand the relationship between the event, the image of the event in collective memory and analyse the political instrumentalisation of collective images of WWII.

  • 1. World War II (basic characteristics) and its legacy 2. Europe under German domination and its image in post-war European culture 3. The war in the "West" and its image in literature and film 4. The war in the "East" and its image in literature and film 5. The political trials of Nazi criminals in Germany and the "re-education" of German society 6. Political trials associated with the Nazi occupation in Czechoslovakia and selected European countries 7. World War II as seen through the eyes of the first post-war years in Czechoslovakia 8. World War II, occupation and resistance in the political history of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and Marxist history 1948-1989 9. The Shoah in world and Czech historiography 10. The image of the Shoah in Czech and world memorial culture 11. The Romani Holocaust in historiography
